Appears to be a bit daunting at first but the release of a huge burden when the only material possessions you need to be concerned with is what you are able to fit in your backpack.

But you say it is only for those on a fixed budget or those who want to slum it.  I can tell you it is not and more and more are doing it as much for the travel as for the getting back to knowing themselves.  Getting rid of life’s so called baggage and stopping to smell the roses.  Actually learning how roses smell all over again.  One fellow I know totally downsized to go backpacking.  Sold his 6 bedroom house, 5 cars, everything except what he could fit into a 28L backpack.

- 1 light jacket
- 2 pairs of shorts
- 1 pair of running/trek shoes
- 5 pairs of boxer briefs
- Assorted toiletries
- Clothesline & large ziplock bag (for washing clothes)
- 1 MacBook Pro 15″
- 1 64GB Wifi iPad
- 1 iPhone 4
- 1 Livescribe Pen & small notebook
- My passport & credit cards

And off he went for the next few months.

One of the most refreshing both physically and mentally adventures he has ever gone on.

Simply because he did not have “stuff” to worry about.  He went where he wanted when he wanted.  He started to gain back his “Freedom of Thought” as he said.

Now this may be a bit extreme but it shows a point that it is not only the burned out college kids that back pack.  Yes there are a number of backpackers who can afford the 5 star accommodations and all of the pampering.  But they prefer to meet and walk with the locals and experience life as most people.
